Heads-Up Versus Multiway
1. What is the main thing to remember as the number of hands increases?
Certain hands go down in value.
2. Give an example of a hand that loses value in a multiway pot?
T♦ 3♥ T♠
3. What hands are better heads-up?
Big pairs.
4. What hands are better multiway?
The drawing hands.
5. What does this mean?
You should raise or reraise with big poker pairs, unless your raise is unlikely to think out the field.
6. Example?
If a jack raises, everyone calls, and you are last with K♦ 4♣ K♠ , it may be better to just call and see what develops.
7. What is the problem with reraising in this situation?
You make the pot so large that your opponents who otherwise would play badly by calling from fourth street on are now playing correctly.
8. Anything else?
Not reraising also disguise your hand so that it is easier to thin out the field later. In addition, it introduces an element of randomization to your play.
9. What is the exception?
You still should raise for value if your hand is extremely strong and completely live.
10. How should you play if you have a big pair and only a small number of people are in?
You should just about always raise (or reraise).
11. Should you ever reraise in a multiway pot with a small pair?
Yes.
12. Example?
You are low with 3♥ A♦ 3♣ . Five people call your bring-in, and then a jack raises. You usually should reraise.
13. What is the reason that your reraise is a better play than either calling or folding?
First, you most likely will knock out everyone but the jack. Second, the pot is large enough that folding is wrong. And third the hand plays better heads-up against a probable pair of jacks.
14. Should you now be prepared to go to the river?
Yes, unless your opponent pairs jacks on board.
