Playing a Big Pair Against a Possible Flush or Straight
1. Is it ever best to check and call with a big pair on fifth poker street?
Yes.
2. When would this be correct?
Against a three flush showing or a hand like?? 6♥ 7♦ 8♠ .
3. Why is this check correct?
First, most opponents automatically will bet with this type of board. And second, if you bet and are raised, you usually should call anyway. Thus, by checking, you get money in the pot when you have the best hand, but you save money those times when your opponent is very strong.
4. What if you have a hidden two pair or trips and are facing a three straight or three flush?
Still check. Then you normally would call with two pair and check-raise with the trips (unless you are almost positive your opponent has a made hand.)
5. What if your two pair or trips include a pair on board?
Be more inclined to bet.
