PLAYING POKER

Playing without Money

There are a few Internet sites that offer fun-only poker games.

Some provide a limited range of games that are very unrealistic, and some provide a wide range of realistic games.

IRC Poker

The best of the on-line poker games played without money are on an IRC channel, irc.poker.net.

A graphical client can be downloaded free from Greg Reynold’s Web site.

Players from Europe and Japan can often be found on this site, so there is always a game, no matter what time it might by in your time zone.

Holdem, no matter what time it might by in your time zone.

Holdem is the most popular game, but you can select from channels that provide Seven Card stud, Omaha high/low, seven card stud high/low, Omaha/8, pot-limit Holdem, and pot-limit Omaha.

There are other Internet locations that provide games which can be played with no money.

Yahoo has one, for example, but the games on the IRC channels are the closest to real games in terms of the play of the other players that I’ve seen.

They do tend to be very loose and very aggressive, but the players who frequent the IRC channels include some very good poker players and the games can be a rewarding challenge. I recommend it highly.

World Rec.Gambling.Poker Tournament

The World Rec.Gambling. Poker Tournament (WRGPT) is an annual poker tournament played by E-mail.

The tournament begins in the fall, and usually lasts many months, to the complete aggravation of some of the players. The game played is no-limit Holdem.

The most recent event attracted about a thousand players from all over the world.

Starting with almost one hundred tables, the game began in September, and by July there was only one player left. The prize is bragging rights until the next game.

To find out about the game, ask on rgp. Most of the WRGPT players are readers of rgp.
