LOTTERY

This is one of the real old-time banking card games, but it is still played by many, and is very well suited to large groups.
Requirements

  1. Any number from five up.
  2. Two regular 52-card decks.

Value of the Cards. The cards and suits have no comparative rank.

Selecting the Dealer. By mutual consent any player may shuffle the pack; then he places it in the center of the table and any player may cut. The acting dealer squares the cut and deals one card face up to each player including himself, starting with the player at his left, and rotating to the left, clockwise. This goes on until an ace is dealt; the player receiving it becomes the dealer. On completion of each deal the deal rotates to the player at the dealer’s left, and moves clockwise on the completion of each deal.

The Ante. Each player antes in the center of the table a sum of chips mutually agreed upon this becomes the pot.

The Deal and Play. The two decks are kept separated at all times. After both decks have been shuffled and cut, the dealer selects one of them and deals each player a card face down. Then, from the second deck, he deals one card to each player face up. Each player then turns up his down card, and if it matches any face-up card on the table in denomination, he collects the chips in the pot. (If there are two or more winners on one card, they divide the chips equally.) If his card also matches some face-up card in color as well as denomination, he collects an extra chip from the player who has that card. If a player’s downcard matches his own upcard, he collects his own stake as well as the stake in front of any other face-up card he matches; besides that, each player in the game pays him an extra chip. The chips are then gathered for another deal. Any stake in front of a player, which has not been collected, remains there for the next deal. But each player must ante a new stake for the next deal.
variations canasta . Here are two variations of Lottery:

  1. In one variation, each player may be dealt two, three, or even more cards face down. Each player is then dealt two, three, or more cards face up. He places an ante on each card separately. The downcards are then turned up, and the players collect on matching cards as in regular Lottery.
  2. The game also may be played with a single deck when there are but a few players. The deck is divided into two 24-card sections, each containing one red and one black suit. First one section is dealt for downcards, then the other section is dealt for upcards.

BANGO
A little like Bingo, a little like the old poker-solitaire game of Lotto, this one has always been an attractive pastime. I’ve taken some bugs out of the rules to make the game mathematically sound.
Requirements

  1. Two ordinary 52-card decks having different backs.
  2. From two to ten players.

Object of the game. To go bango by in accordance with the rules turning five face-up cards face down.

Selecting the Dealer. By mutual consent any player shuffles one pack of cards, which is cut by any other player. The acting dealer gives each online poker player one card at a time face up, starting to the player at his left and dealing clockwise, until a player is dealt an ace. This player becomes the first dealer; on the completion of each deal the deal passes, clockwise, to the player at the dealer’s immediate left.

The Deal. The dealer and the player at his left each shuffles one pack of cards and the dealer offers his deck to the player at his right four the cut. (If that player declines the cut, the dealer must cut. (If that player declines the cut, the dealer must cut.) Then to each player the dealer deals five cards one at a time, starting with the man at his left and dealing clockwise. The remainder of the cards are set aside, dead, out of play. The players turn their five cards face up in front of them. The dealer takes the pack that the player to his left has shuffled, cuts them, and is ready for the play.

Play of the Hand. Each player antes into the pot an equal amount of chips previously agreed upon. Then the dealer turns face up on the table the top card of the deck, announcing its numerical value and suit. Any player having before him a card of the same denomination and suit turns that card face down.
The dealer goes on exposing and announcing the cards until some player has turned his five cards face down. That is bango, the player says so, and he wins the pot. After a player has declared himself bango, it is conventional in this game and no refelection on the player’s integrity-for the dealer to examine first the player’s cards and then the face up stack of dealt cards to certify the correctness of the claim.

THIRTY –ONE

This game is often called Schanutz.
Requirements

  1. Any number may play, but four or more make the best game.
  2. A regular 52-card deck is used.

Rank of Cards. Cards rank as follows: ace ( high), king, queen, jack, ten, nine, eights, seven, six, five, four, three, two (low). cards count: ace, 11; king, queen, jack , 10; all other cards, their face value.

Beginning of the Game. The selection of the dealer, seating positions, changing seats, shuffle, and cut are as provided under the General Rules for Card Games, chapter 1.
The Deal. The player cut and low cut deals. Each player is dealt three cards, one at a time, per round. Three cards are also dealt face up, one after each round. These cards are dealt in the middle of the table and constitute an open widow or blind. The turn to deal in subsequent hands goes to the left.
Object of the Game. To obtain a hand whose count totals 31 in cards of one suit. Or to have a hand at the showdown whose count in one suit is higher than any other player’s.
The Ante and Play. Before play begins, each player antes an equal amount into the pot.

Play begins with the player at the dealer’s left. He may exchange a card from his hand for any card in the widow, leaving his own card face up in its stead. Some players permit the exchange of two cards or even three. The turn to exchange in similar fashion goes around the table to the left. This procedure continues in clockwise rotation until some player knocks to indicate that he is satisfied. Then all hands are shown and compared, and the player with the highest count in cards of the same suit is the winner of the pot. If there is a tie in the count between two or more players, the player with the highest ranking cards, the next highest are compared and so on.

A play player may knock at any time, even before the exchanging of cards begins. If a player knocks after exchanging has begun, the other players following him in turn are allowed to exchange cards. At any time that a player holds 31, he simply exposes his hand and collects the pot without further delay.
